The Kanien’kehá:ka people are matrilineal by tradition, however 400 years of external influences exerted extreme pressures that dampened women’s voices for generations. However, many positive changes are occurring and women are very vocal today.
Language
Language revitalization has accelerated since the 1970s. All Longhouse ceremonies are conducted in Kanien’kehá:ka including wakes and funerals.
