The Kanien’kehá:ka Mohawk Nation Council of Chiefs are recognized by the Haudenosaunee Confederacy as the leadership of the of Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. The central fire of the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation is located in Akwesasne on the Great St. Lawrence River.
Traditionally condoled Clan Mothers and Chiefs continue to conduct daily business and complete the yearly ceremonial cycle with the help of many community members and family. Constant effort is made to strengthen the use of the Kanien’kehá:ka language among our people and instill the responsibility to care for the environment and each other.
The Kanien’kehá:ka Nation consists of six communities with more than fourty-thousand Kanien’kehá:ka people. The people hold inherent rights to exist and govern ourselves according to the traditional structures and protocols of the Great Law of Peace. We continue to play a vital role in the Haudenosaunee Confederacy as the Keeper of the Eastern Door.
